Tips for taking care of your stoma
Millions of people around the world find the need for a urostomy. A blockage in the urethra or a bladder problem, such as cancer, can restrict or even block the flow of urine out of the body. When this happens, the urine can return to the kidneys and cause infections or other problems that can be potentially dangerous to our health. To avoid these problems, it is necessary to have a way to extract urine from the kidneys of the body and this surgical procedure is called urostomy.
Are there any restrictions with a urostomy?
Many people worry that living with a urostomy may have significant restrictions and limitations on their lifestyle. While this may be a legitimate concern, the good news is that living with a urostomy can have a limited impact on your activities once you adapt to live with it.
Immediately after surgery we may have some restriction to lead or lift until the stoma is cured. Even while using a pouch, you can be active and participate in activities such as swimming, hiking and, yes, even sports. Care should be taken when participating in contact sports, as they may cause injury to the stoma or detachment of your pouch. Consult your doctor or nurse before you participate in any contact sport.
There are usually no dietary restrictions, but we must drink a lot of fluids to avoid any kidney infection.
For adults, intimacy can also be a concern after a urostomy. Men may be affected by urostomy surgery, but usually only for a short period of time, while women are often not affected.
